Woodloes Primary School PSHE Curriculum

At our school, PSHE is a fundamental part of our curriculum and underpins our commitment to developing happy, healthy and well-rounded children who are prepared for life in modern Britain. In line with the vision and values of Community Academies Trust (CAT), our PSHE curriculum is designed to support pupils’ personal development, wellbeing and character education, ensuring all children are able to thrive and achieve excellence.  The scheme has strong links to our school values of Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence (PRIDE).

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through the My Happy Mind Plus programme, which provides a structured, progressive and evidence-based approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing. Pupils are taught the science behind happiness and how the brain works, enabling them to understand and manage their emotions, develop resilience and build positive relationships. This supports one of our core values of ‘Perseverance’, helping children to approach challenges with confidence, determination and a growth mindset.

PSHE learning at Woodloes Primary School explicitly promotes and encourages pupils to understand themselves and others, respect and value differences and diversity and act responsibly within their school community and the wider world. Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop empathy, self-awareness and moral understanding, alongside essential life skills such as communication, decision-making, digital awareness and personal safety.

Our PSHE curriculum supports pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepares them to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected society. By the time pupils leave our school, we intend for them to be emotionally literate, resilient and reflective individuals who strive for excellence, are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for the next stage of education, and are ready to contribute positively to society.

Woodloes Primary School RSE Curriuclum

At Woodloes Primary School, our intent is to deliver a high-quality Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) curriculum that supports pupils’ personal development by enabling them to build healthy, respectful relationships, understand how to keep themselves safe and develop the emotional resilience needed to thrive. Our RSHE provision is age-appropriate, inclusive and fully aligned with statutory guidance and the expectations of the National Curriculum.

RSHE is delivered through Jigsaw PSHE, which provides a carefully sequenced and progressive curriculum from Early Years to Year 6. The Jigsaw RSE content supports pupils to develop respect for themselves and others, understand different types of relationships and families, and learn about personal boundaries, consent and online safety in a developmentally appropriate way. Jigsaw is underpinned by strong values, including respect, empathy, equality and responsibility, which reflect our school values of Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity and Excellence (PRIDE) along with key links to British values.

Our wider PSHE curriculum is delivered through My Happy Mind Plus, which has a strong focus on positive mental health, emotional literacy and resilience. Our intent is that pupils develop a secure understanding of their emotions and learn strategies to manage challenges and seek support when needed. The Jigsaw RSHE programme links closely with My Happy Mind Plus, ensuring a coherent and joined-up approach to wellbeing, relationships and personal development across the school.

To further strengthen our safeguarding and personal safety provision, we also draw on the Protective Behaviours curriculum. This supports our intent for pupils to recognise their right to feel safe, identify trusted adults and develop confidence in responding to situations that make them feel worried or unsafe. Protective Behaviours complements both Jigsaw and My Happy Mind Plus by reinforcing consistent safety messages.

Throughout our RSHE curriculum, pupils are taught in a safe, supportive and inclusive environment that reflects the diversity of life in modern Britain. Our intent is that all pupils, including those with more complex needs, are supported to understand themselves, respect others and leave primary school prepared for the next stage of their education with confidence, resilience and a strong sense of personal responsibility.
