Woodloes Primary School Religious Education Curriculum

Our school is committed to providing a broad and balanced curriculum, which includes Religious Education (RE) as a statutory subject. RE is taught in accordance with statutory requirements and the locally agreed syllabus, and supports pupils in developing an understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, promoting respect, tolerance, and cohesion within our diverse community.

Parents and carers have the legal right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. Should you wish to exercise this right, we kindly ask that you notify the school in writing, clearly outlining your request.

Where a child is withdrawn from RE, the school will make appropriate alternative educational arrangements and ensure that the pupil is appropriately supervised during RE lessons. Withdrawal from RE does not affect a pupil’s entitlement to a broad and balanced education.

We value open and constructive communication with parents and carers and are happy to discuss the RE curriculum, the statutory framework, or any concerns you may have regarding your child’s education. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you would like further information or clarification.

At Woodloes Primary School, Religious Education (RE) aims to develop pupils’ knowledge, understanding, and respect for a wide range of religious and non-religious worldviews. Using the Maestro scheme of work, our RE curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive, enabling pupils to revisit and build upon key concepts and skills throughout their learning journey.

Our RE Curriculum Aims to:
  • Develop Knowledge and Understanding
Pupils learn about beliefs, practices, symbols, stories, and ways of life across different religions and worldviews. From Key Stage 1, children explore festivals, worship, rituals, and religious stories, recognising both similarities and differences between communities.
  • Promote Critical Thinking and Reflection
As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they deepen their understanding by explaining the meaning and significance of beliefs and practices. They make connections between religious stories and lived experiences, reflecting on celebrations, pilgrimages, and key life events.
  • Encourage Enquiry and Creativity
Through the enquiry-based approach of the Maestro scheme, pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions about belonging, meaning, purpose, and truth. They respond through discussion, writing, art, music, and drama, learning to express their views clearly while listening respectfully to others.
Personal Development and British Values
RE plays an important role in pupils’ personal development and understanding of British values. Children explore ideas of right and wrong, fairness, respect, and cooperation. As they progress, pupils engage with increasingly complex ethical questions.

Outcomes
By the time pupils leave Woodloes Primary School, they will have a secure foundation of religious and worldview knowledge, strong enquiry and reasoning skills, and the confidence to reflect thoughtfully on their own values and beliefs.
